Student Council
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Both the School Council and the Sixth Form Council are essential parts of the William Brookes School. Members of Year Councils and the Sixth Form Council are
nominated and chosen by Tutor Groups (usually involving elections) to represent their interests and to debate issues of wider importance in the school at half-termly
Year Council meetings. From these meetings, two Year Representatives are nominated to go forward as members of the School Council which meets regularly.
The School Council has an important advisory function and is central to active citizenship in the school. Issues that have been dealt with include: changes to
uniform, health and safety, the behaviour code and the vision for the new school (including attending a weekend conference). Subcommittees have worked on issues
relating to the dining hall, healthy eating and the school environment. Student Council members also contribute to policy reviews and helped to organise events for
the school's Golden Jubilee celebration. The School Council receives the proceeds of income from two Non-Uniform Days and is responsible for allocating these funds
to projects of their choice, either in school or for a charity.
School Council members have represented the school on community bodies such as the Bridgnorth Community Safety Partnership, Schools for Health and the Rural
Transport Group. Members of the Council are involved in meeting visitors in school including County Councillors, the local MP, National Politicians and members
of the Royal Family. In 2005/06 the Council members proposed a scheme to introduce peer mentors for new intake (Y7) students which is now well established and
successful.
School Council members have been actively involved in local democracy week which has led to some members working with the local council as well as at national
level with MPs to provide a voice and take action on the behalf of young people in Shropshire.
THE SIXTH FORM COUNCIL
The Sixth Form Council is led and organised by a President and Vice President who, along with tutor group representatives, meet fortnightly. The Council discusses real
issues and endeavor to bring about real change for the good of all. Minutes of meetings are kept and are posted on the Sixth Form notice board in the Common Room.
Anyone wishing to stand for the President or Vice President applies and is interviewed. Short listed candidates are then put forward for election.
The Sixth Form Council organises a Christmas and Summer Party every year. Last year it was held at The Albrighton Hussey Hotel. This gives students a chance to see
staff in a way that they have never seen them before! Also, "It's a real chance for Year 12/13 bonding".
