Revision

There are several ways to revise and different people find their own best ways to study in what can be a difficult time. One or two aspects of revision are likely to be true for everyone:
. If you want to do well then you need to do quite a lot of it. This takes a lot of determination and perseverance because it is not at all easy.
. Quick revision, a few nights before the exam, does not usually help. It takes time and needs starting early. The worse you are at revising the more time it takes!
. Just reading through books is not a sensible way to revise. You need to be active in some way, shape or form - making notes, creating a powerpoint presentation or just chanting some facts to yourself for example.

Most brains do not work well for a long period without some form of rest. You should aim to spend around thirty minutes revising before you have a short break, preferably involving exercise. This should enable you to return to revision refreshed and working more efficiently. It is a good idea to change the type of activity or subject you are studying at least every hour so that there is some variety.

It can be disappointing to spend time revising a topic and then find that you forget most of it. The good thing is the fact that revising the topic again very quickly brings it back and you begin to understand things you never understood before.

Our 2010 Parental Seminar included a presentation you should find useful. It's full of helpful tips and suggestions for a successful revision strategy.

If you start revising early, plan it carefully and follow your plan, your chances of success are much, much greater. Good luck! The four pdfs hopefully offer some practical advice. Please take the time to read them.
