William Brookes School Uniform
Reasons for having a uniform
Whilst appreciating that students wish to be individuals, all students are expected to wear correct school uniform. We believe that wearing a common, sensible form
of clothing has a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of the school and sets an appropriate tone. Wearing a uniform identifies a student with their school. We
very much hope that students will wear their uniform with some pride in recognition of the ways that students are treated, the work expectations of them and the
support provided for them. In sports matches, trips and on journeys to and from school this can instil pride, encouraging identity with, and support for, the school
ethos.
Wearing uniform can also:
. support positive behaviour and discipline
. ensure that students of all races and backgrounds feel welcome
. protect children from social pressures to dress in a particular (and probably expensive) way
. nurture cohesion
. promote good relations between different groups of pupils
Above all, we believe that wearing school uniform supports effective teaching and learning. The wearing of uniform in school ensures that all students are neat
and businesslike in appearance, which in turn affects their attitude to school and to their studies. Please note that the freedom to manifest a religion or a
belief does not mean that an individual has the right to manifest their religion or belief in school. A high standard of personal appearance is expected of all
our pupils and anyone arriving at school not in uniform may be sent home to get changed.
School Uniform
The main items of school uniform can be purchased from the Trutex catalogue which will be available at the New Parents' Induction Evening. After that, the
Trutex catalogue and order form will be available in school. The prices have a good discount and the school earns 10% commission for school funds on all sales.
Orders can be sent directly to Trutex and they assure prompt deliveries directly to you. Orders and returns are all free of postage. Wrong sizes can be returned
for alternatives. We hope that most families will choose this scheme - to enable easier shopping and gain additional funding that will contribute to your child's
education. However, as long as students comply with the uniform requirements, items can be purchased from normal shops.
Trousers & Skirts should be of a smart, conventional, school uniform style and should be black in colour. Please note that this does not include: jeans,
wide style trousers, cords, denim-garments, stretch fabrics and fashion additions such as frills, studs, large zips, etc.
Skirt lengths should be sensible - not too short or too long.
School Ties are available from Reception, price £3.00. They should be worn at a conventional length (with usually six or seven stripes visible).
Blouses & shirts should be pale blue, in a standard school uniform style, worn tucked in. Fitted blouses are not acceptable as they do not stay tucked in.
V-Neck School sweatshirt with logo can be bought from Trutex Direct (by mail order), Bristows of Bridgnorth or SR Embroidery of Broseley. Please note that
this is a compulsory item.
Shoes should be of a standard and conventional style, in black and should be safe for school. No trainers should be worn to lessons in school. High heels,
platforms, wedges, boots or sandals, etc are not acceptable styles.
Trainers are only allowed to be worn around school during PE activities or (with a Doctor's note) if a foot has been injured. Because it is against
Health & Safety Regulations for students to engage in practical work in a workshop whilst wearing trainers, any student who attends Technology lessons in
trainers will not be able to take part in practical work.
Socks & Tights should be black, without emblems or decoration.
Belts should be black in colour and be plain, without any decorative fashion styles like studs etc.
Jewellery should not be worn. We allow one plain ring and plain gold or silver stud earrings where ears have been pierced. Only one stud per ear in the
lower lobe is allowed and students will be asked to remove any additional studs.
Hair styles should be sensible. We do not allow shaved heads, unconventional styles (e.g. cut patterns or designs) or unnatural colours in school. Long
hair will need to be tied back in practical lessons.
Coats In cold weather these are worn travelling to and from school and outside the school buildings at lunchtime. They should be a proper coat or jacket style,
of a plain dark colour with a front fastening. Non-uniform sweatshirts, sports tops, "hoodies" or jackets with bold words or logos on them and other outer wear are
not permitted. Some parents may prefer their child to wear a plain lighter coloured coat in the winter months for road safety. This discretion will be allowed
provided there is a note from you to the relevant key stage learning manager. During lesson and registration times only school sweatshirts are allowed.
Sixth Form There is no uniform for Sixth Form students but we will not allow extreme styles of dress or personal appearance which may be seen as offensive
or inappropriate to a business-like environment. Sixth Formers are expected to be moderate in dress (other than on fancy dress days of course) as senior and
responsible members of a community where conventional dress standards are observed.
PE Kit is available for purchase through school. Items are provided at a good discount through Bristow Sports (of Bridgnorth) or S.R. Embroidery
(of Broseley), which benefits the school fund. Orders placed with Bristows by an appropriate date will be ready for collection on New Parents Evening.
Samples will be on display at the New Parents' Evening and staff will be available to take orders. Items will be ready for collection from school in
September. Orders placed with S.R. Embroidery will be available for collection from the shop at Instone's Buildings, The Square, Broseley during the summer
holidays.
A leaflet giving full details and prices, together with an order form, is available from the PE department and reception throughout the year.
Please make sure that all items of uniform are named. These can then be returned to your child if they are lost.
