Moving to or Changing Schools to William Brookes School

Transferring or applying to William Brookes School can be done via the Shropshire County Council website (linked from the Links box on the home page of this site) where there is detailed information available.

People change schools for many reasons. You may have a Y6 pupil who lives within the local area; you may be moving home into the locality; possibly you have chosen for your child to be home schooled for a while; perhaps your child had problems at their previous school or they might have been expelled. Whatever the reasons for applying for your child's transfer to William Brookes School, we hope that this will be a positive move and we will do all we can to ensure that this is the case.

William Brookes is a friendly school in a vibrant community, so hopefully you and your child will feel welcomed and they will make new friends in no time.

Information Events

Events are arranged every year so that parents (especially of Y6 pupils) can be informed about the William Brookes School ethos and practical arrangements for students applying to and starting at this school. In addition, parents are encouraged to visit the school in order to look around and to discuss the individual needs of their child. Please telephone the School Reception to arrange this (01952 727606).

Parents who are considering applying for a place for their children are most welcome to attend the following events:
. October, Open Evening (date in diary): 7.00pm. - 9.00pm.
. October, Open morning (date in diary): 9.30am. - 12.15pm.
. June/July, New Parents' evening (date in diary): start at 7.30pm.

Year 11 students and parents are invited to the Sixth Form Open Evening:
. November, (date in diary): 7.00pm. - 9.00pm.

Applying

Send in the form which nominates your preferred choice of secondary school. This form comes from the Local Authority via your child's Primary School.
Application forms can also be completed on-line, within the education and learning section of the Shropshire County Council website. For potential Y6 students the form will need to be completed by early November.

Please
. Read about the school on this website and talk to parents of children as well as speaking with children you may know at the school. They can tell you most of what you need to know.
. Come to the New Parents' evening for parents of Y6 pupils (please note that this is not intended for pupils) where the Head will introduce the school.
. Come to the Open Evening and/or the Open Morning at William Brookes School when you and your child/children can look around the school to speak with subject teachers and see what goes on during a normal working day.

What happens after an application
. The decision from Shropshire County Council (or Telford) should arrive by early March - by post. Then you can prepare for your child's start at William Brookes School.
. Bus application letters will be distributed by your child's Primary School or can be obtained from the school.
. Invitations are sent out to parents and Y6 students to come to the New Parents' Evening and Y6 induction days at the school.
. Come to the New Parents' Evening. Information that will be provided on this evening includes the New Parents' Guide, which outlines arrangements for purchasing uniform, PE kit and the chance to travel on an out-of-area bus (out-of-area means not free transport) if there is room. There is stiff competition for places usually.
. Y6 pupils are invited to attend two induction days at William Brookes School in early July so that they can become used to the school layout and arrangements.
. Shropshire County Council (SCC) send out letters during August letting parents and students know which bus they can travel on and the time and place to catch it. This letter acts as a temporary bus pass until the school provides one.
. Bus passes are sent by SCC to William Brookes School for the start of term and are handed out to students early in the autumn term.
