Parents can find a secondary school (and sometimes their children at this age) daunting. All schools are busy and their main purpose is clearly for
teachers to be teaching, along with associated activities like marking and planning lessons. There are many ways that parents support the school, not
least in ensuring that the positive ethos of cooperation, respect and endeavour that we have here is maintained. At this age students may not welcome
hand holding and will want to make their own decisions. It is still important though that communication is kept as open as possible, with some time
provided - pealing them away from their computer where necessary! The school is very keen to work in partnership with parents. There are several
opportunities to visit to watch a performance, discuss your child's progress or meet with people who will listen and act upon your concerns about
problems your child (or you) are experiencing. The four main ways to best support your child's progress:
. Support their emotional development: listen to them, hear what they have been up to and contact the school about any serious concerns.
. Be involved in their education: attending parent's evenings or target setting days, focussing their attention on homework and revision, not letting
them become too absorbed in electronic pastimes, monitoring their homework and signing their planner.
. Support their efforts: encourage them to have a view that they can do something positive, with good skills and interests in certain areas.
. Provide for them: healthy food and drinks, classroom materials, sensible clothes, purposeful items that they need to participate in the activities
of their generation, exercise and some entertainment.
This section provides information for parents of children just starting the school but sections will be added and we would welcome your insights or
writings about areas that other parents might be interested in.
