William Brookes School is a mixed 11 to 18 comprehensive school which serves a large rural area. It is an average-sized school with approximately
940 students on roll, around 120 of whom are in the Sixth Form. In its sixth year as a Performing Arts College, the school has a lively atmosphere and
rich extended learning opportunities. The Edge Arts Centre serves both our school and the wider community. As a recognised High Performing Specialist
School, the bid to take on Maths & Computing as a second specialism was successful. This will further increase the focus on utilising ICT in all
subjects, especially within maths teaching. As a Coubertin School, there are strong links with Olympic ideals especially within sporting activities
and striving for personal best performances.
The school sits in beautiful surroundings on the edge of the attractive small town of Much Wenlock. We enjoy and benefit from a unique country location
where the school has an important role to play in sustaining a thriving community. An active and skilled governing body help to ensure the success of
the school. There are eight partner primary schools, with which we work closely. However, the school population is drawn from some 20 or more primary
schools, including in Telford, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury and the wider rural area of South East Shropshire. A majority of students travel to school by bus.
This is a comprehensive school in that it offers diverse educational pathway choices and a broad range of extended learning opportunities. Our students
have many interests, gifts and talents. We are proud, for example, of the success of students with Statements of Special Educational Need or who are on
our SEN list; also those students who attain excellent qualifications. A high proportion of students at the school go on to further and higher education,
including to Oxford and Cambridge.
The socio-economic background of the locality is mixed. Learning is valued in the community and student's ambitions are well supported by parents. The
healthy blend of supportive backgrounds, abilities and interests is drawn together in what Ofsted described in May 2007 as "a good school with many
outstanding features." They say that the school successfully meets its aim to provide 'high quality education across the whole curriculum and for
students of the full range of talents, interests and skills'. We are looking for ways to improve, enhancing educational provision.
